Artist Interview: Toshiyuki Kimura

Please introduce yourself and your work style.

A style called “MATIM” : From the farthest reaches of the universe to the back of the chabudai (Japanes dining table)- catching the mysterious radio waves of a mysterious consciousness that keeps watching and staying, their activities as illustrators are developed without regard to style.

MATIM…the big picture is the same as the universe, expanding and contracting repeatedly. An epic space opera or a scripture that leads us to the truth. It is a word coined from the word mate, which is included in words such as roommate, checkmate, soulmate, etc. In recent years, the word has been amplified with the appearance of companies and music using the same word.

What are the sources of inspiration for your work?

The inspiration itself is, for example, when I am going to have an exhibition, I have a plan that I’ve made by the morning, and I think I will definitely do it that way. But then an accident happens, and the whole plan is destroyed, like the works collapsed or it disappears, and when that happens, the plan you made is destroyed and replaced with something different. Suddenly, you find yourself in a different situation, and you have to be with what is there. That state is my inspiration.

What do you want to convey through your work?

I want each of you to explore the nature of the body by “mate” with the time and space of the work presented.

As an artist, what is the most difficult thing you are facing?

While my work as an illustrator for MATIM, which is also my first order, is accumulating, I am struggling to choose between the work because the guarantee for other order is clear.

What would you like to tell people who are looking at your work?

To realize that you are “mate” with something.
When you are trapped in life and approaching a checkmate situation, talk to your work and become one with it when you feel coolness, laughter, and lightness.
